How Room Color Can Affect Your Mood

I find theories behind Feng Shui really interesting and I am a strong believer in the power of room color. As I’m getting ready to move into our new place, paint swatches are on the mind and I definitely plan on repainting the dining room, upstairs bathroom, and master bedroom.

Whether you realize it or not, the color schemes in your home can have a direct effect on your mood. Some softer colors may create a peaceful feeling of tranquility while other “louder” colors may create a feeling of energy and excitement. Therefore, each color holds some sort of psychological value and should be chosen carefully. Here are a few things to keep in mind while choosing an interior color:

  • What the room is used for (i.e. kitchen, bathroom, bedroom…)?
  • What colors make you feel certain emotions?
  • What kind mood do you want the room to create?

Red raises a room’s energy level and can be good when you want to stir up excitement. Used in prime entertainment areas in your home, the color red can draw people together and stimulate conversation. Try using red as an accent wall to prevent over-stimulation.
Pros: Excitement, energy, celebration, happiness, romance
Cons: Anger, irritability, danger, violence

Blue slows down blood pressure and heart rate and can encourage relaxation. Blue is known for it’s calming effect and is a great choice for a bedroom. Softer shades will create a more peaceful feeling, while darker blues may create a feeling of sadness.
Pros: Peace, tranquility, harmony, cleanliness
Cons: Cold, depression, melancholy

Yellow represents sunshine and happiness and is good for kitchens and bathrooms, where yellow is refreshing and energizing. A soft yellow can also make smaller spaces seem bigger.
Pros: Cheeriness, uplifting, hope, optimism, joy
Cons: Illness, betrayal, jealousy

Green is considered to be the most restful color. By combining the refreshing quality of blue and cheeriness of yellow, green creates the best of both worlds. Green is best suited to almost any room in a home.
Pros: Relaxing, calming, comfort
Cons: Misfortune, envy, jealousy

Orange evokes excitement, enthusiasm and is an energetic color. While not a good idea for a living room or for bedrooms this color is great for an exercise room or playroom.
Pros:Warmth, cheerfulness, energy, power, enthusiasm
Cons: Over-stimulation, loudness

Purple is considered a luxurious color due to its origins in royalty. Lighter purples have a similar effect to blue, creating a restful sanctuary without the risk of coldness.
Pros: Sophistication, rich, dramatic, luxurious
Cons:Cruelty, arrogance

Keeping these color theories in mind, what paint colors do you suggest? Do you believe that room color can truly affect your mood?
